Recently in one of my articles, a friend and I were discussing what color scheme I might enjoy for the new apartment I will be living in for the next 2-8 years. She suggested yellow, and I was quick to speak up and say that light, airy colors weren't a source of tranquility for me as they are most folks.

My daughter and I went Wednesday of this week to have a look at the apartment we had chosen, and to make our final decision on which complex we would be living in. Wouldn't you know it? The walls are white, the carpet is light cream, the vinyl is off-white, the bathrooms are off-white... It was, at first, like stepping into a dirty cloud. At least the cabinets are stained a somewhat dark shade of brown, and the mantle to the fireplace is a burnt sienna.

It will take some creativity for me to feel at home there and tone down the brightness, but we did decide to go ahead and finalize the lease. It has a private terrace overlooking a pool that is open year-round, and is run by a very friendly staff, so I'm happy to work with it.

What is your favorite color scheme to surround yourself with? Would you share some thoughts and ideas on what I can do to tone down the light?

I shelled out $12.99 + tax for a luxurious 600 thread count bath sheet today that is Red Hat Society RED, so my bathroom scheme will have to work around that.

We are outfitting a kitchen, dining room, living room, 2 baths, 2 bedrooms, and a private terrace.

HELP!!!

I, too, live in a floor to ceiling white and off-white apartment. When we moved here a year ago, we had almost no furniture as we sold the house and furniture in the previous state. Since both of us love oriental, we bought dark wicker chairs with dark red cushions. We also bought a solid black cabinet for the "entertainment center." The couch is a dark green oriental design. I broke the whiteness of the carpet with a oriental jute rug. The overall effect is airy, but dramatic. The dining table is black as are the chairs and the sideboard is very dark with dark wicker doors.

That sounds beautiful, Penni !!! It had not occurred to me to use an oriental atmosphere, but I can just imagine how rich it seems.

Breaking up the floors with a rug had crossed my mind, but I couldn't piece it in my mind what type of pattern to look for. I'm favoring a contemporary effect, something warm and friendly but not flashy or overwhelming. There's a bookstore I've been watching all summer that is using glass blocks with thick glass shelving in the windows, and I really like the clean, clear lines, but I can't see that blending in well or breaking up the white noise. On one sits an unusual pair of ceramic hands, separate pieces, that are holding a chic masquerade mask. It's been in the back of my mind to see if she'll sell them to me, but I've not asked her about them just yet.

I've learned that my fairies and nymphs and butterflies and hearts will have to be limited to my quarters. The kid had a fit when she found out that I was thinking of incorporating "girlie" things. :)

There are lots of beautiful oriental things at Pier One, and the prices aren't bad. They have an online catalog you can look at, but so much more in the stores. We got a beautiful screen that I put in a corner with a rattan love seat at angle -- it really breaks up the lines.

Sorry about the nymphs, fairies and butterflies -- maybe she would let you have a few butterflies in the main room?

Her idea of interior decorating is carefully strewn dirty clothes and loose art work scattered everywhere, so if I sneak a few in, she might not notice them too terribly much. Now, to figure out how to go shopping alone...... :)

We are getting a scanner next week, and I will finally be able to feature her. Also, have been shopping and shopping for cameras, but WOW.... The prices are just not reasonable. Someone did give me one a few weeks ago, but, of course, it doesn't work.

Pawn shops, indeed !!! I've seen 3 in the whole blooming metro, and they are very inconvenient to get to. I know there has to be more than that here. Maybe when we get moved I'll have more time to devote a day to it. Really do hate to miss all these great pics and reality footage, not to mention grandma's gonna be mad if I don't send her some of these shining moments.

I'm watching Black Friday sales ads, and have went to Wal-Mart x3, Office Depot, K-Mart, Walgreens....

There's probably more pawn shops here that I've just not paid enough attention to, but this has been put off way too long, and I've got so very much to get done, so...... Sure could be nice to find what I was looking for at a decent discount, though.

Go to the paint store and look through their samples. You'll find shades that please you. Then take those samples with you as you shop. If you have a salesperson helping you, show them your samples. They know their color options and stock. Could save you hours of looking.

If you don't like bright colors, you might enjoy the darker jewel colors that were popular a couple years back. They are vibrant but not bright, a darker shade of whatever colors you like.

If you are going to use a large piece of art, you could take your colors from that. Or find furniture (couch, chair, whatever) that has the colors you like and surround it with complementary art.

What kind of textures do you like? Using a variety of textures can help bring the focus off the walls and rugs.

I don't like straight lines or sharp corners, so I look for rounded or wavy lines that soften whatever straight lines I have to have in my furniture. They don't even have to be on the same piece. For instance, a rug with wavy lines distracts the eye from the straight lines of a shelf unit.

If you keep your eye on what is visually pleasing to you, by the time you've assembled your furnishings, the white won't seem so bland or bright.

That's a sound hint that I had forgotten. Thanks ! It sure annoys me to have a cluster of 5 different "ruby reds" or "deep blues".

Another good idea.... I do like bright colors, but only in small doses. I don't want to go home to a carnival every night.

If you keep your eye on what is visually pleasing to you, by the time you've assembled your furnishings, the white won't seem so bland or bright.

I hope so.... I'm thinking that very thick drapes will drown some of this blessed sunshine and city lights, which can, in turn, block the bright effects.

As far as lines go, I had in mind a simple chaise lounge and a couple of wing-backs, but now that I've been in the apartment, I don't think that will work well. It's all so stark that we'll have to soften it with some things more plush/cozy.

My family accuses me of living in a cave because I like dark colors. I have one large wall painted 'cabernet', dark emerald couches, chocolate curtains, black rods and accents, dark side tables, and...gold/butter walls on the other 3 walls. I know, I thought I would hate it. But with the lighting it glows and it is the bomb. I have a bamboo shade over the window, and the curtains tie-back or can be closed (I would live in a cave) I have a large area rug that has a kind of southwest pattern in jewel tones that has all of the colors. I also collect glass that picks up all of the colors. I have an eclectic garage sale look. Just go with what you love. You don't have to do it all at once. My coffee table cost me $4. at a yard sale and $12. to paint, finish, and hack the legs off.

Those are always my favorite finds. We won't be doing it all at once, that's for sure, but there are things that simply cannot wait, like beds/linens, drapes (to protect me from this blessed sunshine), desk, dishes, and something to sit on in the living area. If I can get that all pulled together well, I'll breathe easier.

Here's a website with a neat feature; a personal color viewer. You can play with a color palette. And if you decide to use BM the corresponding paint chip number can be looked up.

Red Hat Society Red, you say? Why, violet. Of course.

Funny you should mention that. We each got one, and hers is violet. I'll be surprised if she settles into one color scheme, except for the rainbow effect.

Thank you so much for the link !! I'll have a looksee and try to pull myself together with it.

I'm a multi-colored person. I don't have a white wall in my house. I love deep, rich colors but some rooms just seem to demand airy colors.

I once heard a great bit of advice.

Buy a painting whose colors you love (perhaps you already have one) or maybe a sofa or rug or even a sofa pillow that has beautiful colors.

Build everything else around that one piece. If everything goes with that piece, it will all go well together. Plus, you know you'll like the combo because you already like that one piece.

Good luck with your new place! Aren't new beginnings great?

Indeed. :) Thanks for the well wishes.

You've got a sound idea here. If I can narrow myself down to one focal point, and then work off that, it can tie in together. The slight trouble with that is that my daughter is an artist, contemporary anime, and she's just full of surprises. Won't it be just my luck to build the whole foundation off of a forest green and rose rug, and then get that purple castle that I asked her for months ago painted on a huge canvas? Lols......

Do you suppose I should vary from room to room, or have a single foundation that flows through the apartment?

Do what you want. The single foundation is old school, in that it isn't a 'rule' anymore. I have an asian inspired bathroom that sort of comes out of nowhere, but it felt right, my son wanted it and it was fun. It's your home, it should reflect you.

Well, I suppose it would depend upon the layout of your apartment.

If it's open from one room to the next, it can be hard to bring in other themes. I think you'd definitely have to stick to the same color tones even if they are different colors. I mean to say that it would be hard to have a pastel room opening into a vibrant red room. The colors can be very different, though, as long as they are "equal" in intensity and brightness.

If your rooms are all closed off from one another, I think you have a lot more leeway. I would go with what looks best in each room. A room with a couple of southern windows can handle deep rich colors while a room with one small northern window would just look gloomy. You'd need a lighter color there. To me, it's all about the lighting.

sorry - I actually don't know squat about interior decorating - I'm just in the middle of remodeling our upstairs so I'm in that mode. One of my sons chose a beautiful rich color called Ancient Copper. My other son chose light olive walls with one wall painted camouflage. It took me days to do that!

Right, right..... I had considered, since I couldn't pick from deep green, blue, red, or black, to just do them all, but as we talk it out, I'm not feeling that so much. I'm really feeling a deep, dark red right now. If I can't find heavy drapes in that, though, I'll have to reconsider....again.

LOL.

It's hard to make the initial decision, isn't it?

I think you could go with many colors. I can picture that.

Perhaps you could have most of your accessories be solid colors, then. Just have a couple of small things be flamboyant and colorful. It would tone down the "psychedelics".

I don't know, I think we should just relax and let go when we decorate. Especially when it comes to paint. It's time-consuming but relatively cheap when compared to things like sofas or drapes. Feel free to go all out. You can always change it if it doesn't make you happy.

Nnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

This is a lot of work !!!!

Too old for this..... My back is just about to slip out of place again (I can feel it going), which means I'm at risk of being forced to spend 3 to 6 weeks bedridden whether I want it or not. It gets dark at 6pm, and in crime-riddled Orlando, that means my curfew is an absolute 4pm. I've got classes to tend for work, which amounts to about 4 hours per day for the rest of the year. All this shopping is cramping my pocketbook, too. I want to pay for it and be finished with it for a few years.

I've had a bad back for forty + years since my ex threw me into a fire place. The doctor first told me I'd never walk again. Told him I didn't have time for that. Spent more than a year in a brace, but it was worth it because it mostly healed. Not always painful. Some days worse than others. Some days it's a struggle to get out of bed.

Only now do I find out about anti-inflammatory drugs made to heal the hurt. I can't believe how much better I feel. I can sleep through the night. I wake up in the morning able to walk normal. I feel light on my feet. Amazing. Just bloody amazing. I feel young and able again.

This week, I had to move a lot of furniture and stuff I'd stored for someone else until they could get their own place. I didn't want the movers wandering everywhere, so I moved it to one room. This morning the movers came to pick it up. It's gone. Yippee.

My back was hurting when I went to bed early. Took my meds. Woke up a while ago, feeling great. If I wasn't worried about waking others, I'd be rearranging my own stuff to where I want it. I've missed the feeling of openness this house is so good at providing. Felt closeted and overstuffed all this time because it was.

Only now do I find out about anti-inflammatory drugs made to heal the hurt.

When I saw a doctor a few years ago about a different pain, I learned that prescription-strength ibuprofen was just concentrated OTC, and I could get the same effects by taking a handful (4, to be precise) of the OTC for the same relief. This little glitch in my back isn't even touched by several doses. I haven't decided if it is a nerve that gets pinched or if it is a disk that slips, but it is nothing short of unholy. The episodes are getting worse, though, as the last one left me crawling, and, for a few days, unable to get off the floor or roll over without crying. *pout*

Have you had it x-rayed to find out what is wrong? It sounds like your sciatic nerve is being pinched or at the very least, it is inflamed. If so, it doesn't need a reason to hurt. It will come and go without rhyme or reason.

Ibuprofen is iffy at best. It may or may not help my back, but it destroys my stomach. No point in taking it even if it does help my back because it just moves the pain to my stomach.

There have been times when it takes a really strong pain killer to even begin to get it to stop hurting. But then I'm too doped up to do anything.

I've always found a muscle relaxant to do more good than most pain killers. But then I can't drive.

This anti-inflammatory doesn't leave me feeling doped up and it stops the pain. It is prescription, so you'd have to see your doctor (which you should do anyway to find out exactly what's wrong).

Yeah, that's the best part. He suffered brain damage. They say that's what made him violent. If so, it helps me understand but doesn't make a difference. I still needed to be free from the violence.

He's long gone from my life It was a long time ago. I rarely think about him or his violence anymore, even when I'm writing about domestic violence. When I do, it seems as if I'm discussing someone else, not myself. A bit eerie, huh?

I'm glad I was able to get free and to continue to enjoy life. I hope he eventually got help and found a measure of happiness for himself.

I've always found a muscle relaxant to do more good than most pain killers.

Muscle relaxers do tend to help when I come across them, but I'm not one to shell out several dozens of dollars to be able to get them, and most doctors I've seen are so selfish with prescriptions that it's not nearly worth it to me to pay them to tell me I'm the one who doesn't know what I need.

I know it is not sciatica. I know this because a. I can literally feel it 'bump' when it either pinches or disconnects, whichever the case is that sends me into OMFG there went my day.......and b. I have had episodes of actual inflamed sciatica in a different portion of my back.

There is a spot that I can pinpoint that simply weak. I've learned to identify the warning signs, and can sometimes take precautionary measures to be sure that it doesn't progress, but there are times, like bending down at the clothes dryer, or going to the toilet to sit down, when I do -something- the wrong way, and that's just that.

It's been happening for about 8 years now, roughly twice a year, sometimes less when I'm extra careful. The last episode was in April of this year. Literally could not roll myself over for days without carefully putting much, much, much thought into it, let alone stand up and walk to the bathroom. Had to crawl, and was laughed at when I couldn't get myself out of the tub.....

Yes, you are right. I should have it x-rayed. Maybe I'll get around to that this year, when I've got a little extra money or if I can find affordable insurance.

A lack of insurance is definitely a handicap. I can't believe that people are fighting against this as a right for all people, but that's another thread.

I've found that certain exercises help if I do them regularly. They should be simple. In my case, the back muscles contract severely, so I have to stretch them back out and tighten the stomach muscles to help balance them out.

One easy one is to lay on your back before getting out of bed, knees bent, then gently straighten the curve in your back by pressing your waist area against the mattress, then hold it until you can feel the muscles relax a bit. I do that about five times before I get up every morning. It definitely helps makes the first few minutes of moving around better. As it stretches the back muscles, it also shortens the stomach muscles.

Deep, slow breathing helps too, bringing more oxygen to the area, which helps the muscle work properly.

In my case, a round robin gets going. The inflamed nerve causes the muscles to contract in spasms, which bends the spine, which puts more pressure on the nerve, which causes more spasms. Who knows which part starts first. Doesn't really matter though. If I can break that cycle, then the pain is relieved.

Yes ma'am, they sure can. Now that I've got floor space to work with, it's much easier to do my low-impact stretches and am looking forward to working out more often.

Your idea of starting before even getting out of bed is really good, and it hadn't occurred to me that something so simple could make such a difference. Thank you for sharing it with me. :)

Really am glad that you were able to overcome and come so far in spite of all you've went through. As a surviving battered wife, I can identify with how challenging it can be to move beyond them and into yourself. But.... That's another topic.

River, you are missing out on your free labor. You should have your daughter paint!

Some days I can't think of any other reason I had a child.

That's the worst time for me. I also raised my bed up, so I don't have to rise to get off from it. It's high enough that my feet are on the floor and all I have to do is stand up straight. So much better.

I grew up with the idea that kids did work. All of us worked hard doing whatever we were capable of at our age. I taught that to my children and am teaching it to my grandson too. Each generation has moved further away from that concept. I don't think that move is good for them.

Too many parents today feel guilty about asking for help or making their kids do chores. They shouldn't. The energy needs to flow both ways for us to have a healthy family. Besides, the more a child learns to do, the more competent they are as an adult. I think one reason why kids are living at home longer is because they never learned essential life skills and need the extra time to catch up.

They do....sometimes.... In little bitty ways..... I've seen mine voluntarily notice that there were dirty dishes, and even wash them. She even prefers to do her own laundry, although she doesn't often get to it as quickly as I think it ought to be done.

I prefer earth-tones myself. And that includes a lot of the shades you might see in the Painted Desert. My place is pretty small and darker colors would make the rooms seem somewhat claustrophobic. I have one accent wall with my darker shade, and then a much lighter complimentary color on the other 3.

As for what I put on my walls, it's pretty much a combination of really old hand & farm tools along with black & white photography. For me, it's calming & restful to be reminded of a time when things didn't seem so god-blessed hectic!

We are equal opposites here. I thrive in quiet, small, dark places. Can't begin to guess why, but my eyes don't filter light well, and it's literally painful at times to be in too much light.

That's a very homey, quaint effect, and I love it generally, when others do it. My sister uses much the same, and she always manages to pull it together well. When I tried to do it before, though, I just ended up looking 'junky'. Might have just been all in my head, though. :)

I take my colors from nature. She mixes them up and so do I. I also use natural materials as much as I can.

I love old stuff too. Have lots of it. Much of it belonged to my family, so that's a bonus. Brings a feeling of time flowing. Since I'm into horses, I have a lot of horse art. Also several Marty Bell's. Love her use of color, bringing the outdoors in.

River - I'm so glad you are getting your own place! No matter what colors you use it is so much better then a few months ago. My rooms are all different colors - the rec room has windows all of the way round except one side and it is painted a dark wine red.

The bathroom I've kept neutral so I can change out the shower curtains and towels with no problems. I just had it - re-tiled and I used a neutral beige pattern on it. That makes it so much brighter and it seems larger too.

My kitchen isn't really a color - it's waiting to be re-done at the moment. Well, we are waiting to afford it. So it's kind of white now, but again curtains and so on are easy to find for it.

I also have back problems - maybe you have bone spurs (growth on the bones). Your pain sounds similar to mine. A recent MRI showed a muscle mass at T2 something else from T3 to T9 and deterioration from L5 to S1.

I had microscopic surgery in 2007 for the bone spurs but they came back. For me nothing helps the pain. Hope your gets better or at least diagnosed.

Have fun choosing all of your housewares!

Hi Soovivers !!! Where've you been hiding? Haven't seen you in days....

River - I'm so glad you are getting your own place!

*Bounces excitedly..... It sure is nice to put this year behind us.

You noted in your bathroom that the lighter colors make the place seem larger, and I'm thinking that was the concept used in this apartment, too. I've always been partial to the angle of dark colors with lots of mirrors to open up a space, but....wasn't me deciding this time. :)

The kitchen I will be working with is a very small rectangle, so there's not much to be done there aside from a little rug and the dishes that reflect our tastes.

The living area is a bit rectangular, open to the dining area, with 2---too big windows and the door to the terrace AND the fireplace on the opposite wall. I'm worried that by the time I cover all that glass it will look like one solid drape-sheet on the whole wall short of the fireplace.

My bedroom is a simple little square, and I have to be careful with the lines I put in there or feel like I'm sleeping in a box.

The back issue.....yeah.....OI...... I can't have back surgery. I've no one to care for me during recovery, and it would be impossible to pay the bills without being able to be up and about for months. I have a spur in one ankle, so I'm familiar with those, and the problem in my back doesn't appear to be a spur, but I dunno. The last episode back in the spring was probably the most unholy experience I've had with it. Lols..... I talked to God a lot those few weeks, and we decided that we didn't think it was in my best interest to keep pushing my body so hard. That's why I need the little old lady status. Just some things I can't be doing anymore. :)

I know what you mean about talking to God - I've done that a whole bunch this year. I guess it is something we have to live with as we get to be a 'woman of a certain age'. lols

I didn't have hardly any down time after my back surgery since it was the microscopic. I went in at 530 am and was out of surgery by eleven and out of the o/p facility by 3 pm. Then I was only in bed a day and felt kind of bad for less then a week. So it's not like it used to be I don't think.

But the cost is high. Luckily we still have insurance from my last employer so they paid for it all. Good luck to you on that River.

Does your kitchen have windows? That's where you can get some color if it does - using curtains. Plus you could paint one wall a darker color and keep the others lighter. Mirrors are a great idea for making a room seem larger. I think sometimes I overdo the mirror thing.

On the terrace doors you could use drapery sheers (that aren't that sheer) and a drapery thing over them or a shaped valance for color. Oh this is so exciting after all you have been though River.

One last thing, I think Loretta mentioned it already, and that is to put a room size rug over the carpet or bare floor in the LR to give it a homier feeling. We have a carpet discount place here so I'm sure there is one there where you can get those 9 by 12 rugs for less then 100.00.

This is a whole new beginning for you River and as tough as you have had it in the last year or so I'm hoping you really enjoy all of this decorating. Do it a little at a time and that way it will be less money and you may have a better idea of what you want to do. I gotta stop now because I just keep thinking of things to say. Good luck River!

Does your kitchen have windows?

No, no windows, but there's a little cubbyhole window at the sink that overlooks the living room.

A rug just might be a must have. What could they have been thinking, putting off-white carpet in an apartment in the middle of a bunch of colleges?
