Houma, Louisiana is on pins and needles this morning watching the progress of Hurricane Gustav. Houma, and it's surrounding areas, are already on the brink of disaster, with entire towns having disappeared since 1950. A total of 900 square miles has been surrendered to the Gulf, and state officials are worried that a direct hit can steal even more of the precious swampland.
There is no levee protection in the Houma area. There are drainage levees, 10 feet tall, that are not expected to keep the hurricane at bay. Plans for federal levee protection have "never gotten off the ground."
